The MSR-H01 MicroMagic Systems Hexapod is a 3 DOF hexapod kit consisting of 26 precision laser cut 5053 aluminum body and leg components. Developed by special effects and animatronics guru Matt Denton of MicroMagic Systems, this hexapod's fluid, natural movements are truly a sight to behold. Using a custom built HexEngine onboard, all of the leg movements are coordinated and gaits are generated dynamically through an advanced Inverse Kinematics engine.

The M3 & M4 machine screws included are high quality stainless steel hexagon button head type, with steel hexagon stand-offs. There are mounting holes on the top body plate for the p.Brain-SMB or SSC32 controllers, with the electronics mounted underneath the top body plate, there is still enough room within the body for a 5 cell Sub-C battery pack. Also, a 9v battery can be fitted within the body frame for a clean logic power supply. At the front of the hexapod there is a servo mounting point for the optional pan/tilt head.

The MicroMagic Systems Hexapod Kit does not include a wireless control solution, though any TTL or RS-232 serial device such as an Xbee or Bluesmirf can easily interface to the p.Brain-SMB. Here is a tutorial on interfacing to the Bluesmirf.

The HexEngine is a p.Brain-ds24 with a special bootloader for uploading the HexEngine locomotion firmware.

The HexEngine is a software module designed for the p.Brain-ds24 hardware module. The HexEngine is a user configurable locomotion engine for hexapod robots. HexEngine is configured via a serial port (RS-232 or TTL level) using standard terminal software such as HyperTerminal or TerraTerm (As HyperTerminal is no longer included with Vista, I recommend using TeraTerm Pro available here: TeraTerm Pro V2.3). Once the HexEngine is configured for the target hexapod platform, the hexapod locomotion can be controlled using simple direction commands over either the RS-232 or TTL serial port. The idea of the HexEngine is to allow you to get your hexapod up and running with minimum fuss, allowing you to concentrate on obstacle avoidance or other high level control applications. The p.Brain-HexEngine reqires a carrier board such as the p.Brain-SMB.

The p.Brain-SMB has been designed for use with the p.Brain-ds24 as a convenient development motherboard giving the user access to all of the I/O features of the p.Brain-ds24. Essentially the p.Brain-SMB routes all of the p.Brain-ds24 signals to convenient connectors.

This Pan & Tilt Head Kit for the MSR-H01 hexapod consists of 3mm black acrylic plates and all fixtures and fittings required for assembly. The kit comes with one HS-225MG servo and one standard size servo HS-322. The tilt operation can be mounted in one of two ways to give either +60 / - 16 degrees or -60 / +16 degrees of range.

The front plate of the pan head has two 3mm mounting holes 20mm apart for direct mounting of sensors or additional front plate with sensors. The front plate cane be directly replaced with an SRF08 range finder module.
